Mistral Large 4: Ollama Cloud setup and Claude Code
Understand Le Chonk, try the documented cloud commands, and check access before treating a model connection as a working coding setup.

Watch on YouTube ↗Choose between cloud access and self-hosting
Mistral Large 4, also called Le Chonk, is an open-weight multimodal model. The video explains its published evaluations and setup routes; it is not Luke’s own head-to-head benchmark. Read comparisons as evidence for the tasks they measure, then check a task that matters to you.
Open weights and cloud access are separate choices. Self-hosting uses your hardware; Ollama Cloud runs the model on Ollama’s servers. The vLLM recipe describes a multi-GPU server configuration, rather than an ordinary laptop installation. Check the model card, licence and current hardware recipe before planning a local deployment.
- Open the model card and vLLM recipe linked below to inspect the self-hosting requirements.
- For the cloud route shown here, use Ollama’s Mistral Large 4 model page. Confirm access and account usage terms before sending work.
Start with a small Ollama Cloud request
Install or update Ollama through its official download page, then follow its setup prompts and sign in with the account you intend to use for cloud models. The :cloud suffix in the command below selects the hosted route; it does not download this large model to your laptop.
In the published video, the first request returned Payment Required. That records an account-access problem, not a successful model response. Cloud usage is not automatically free because the weights are available. Check your account’s access, plan and usage if the request is refused.
- Open a terminal and run: ollama run mistral-large-4:cloud
- Send a small request, such as asking the model to explain a short public code snippet.
- Check for an actual answer. If you see Payment Required or another access error, resolve the account requirement before continuing.
Connect the model to Claude Code
Ollama connects the Claude Code interface to compatible models through its Anthropic-compatible API. Using that interface does not mean an Anthropic Claude model is answering: this route selects Mistral Large 4. Follow Ollama’s Claude Code setup documentation if the launcher reports a missing dependency or account requirement.
Use a disposable project or a copy for a first coding check. A model responding to chat does not establish that it can make a correct file edit, call the required tools, or complete your repository’s tests.
- After confirming cloud access, run: ollama launch claude --model mistral-large-4:cloud
- Check the selected model and connection before giving it a task.
- Ask it to explain one file first, then request one small, reversible change.
- Review the diff and run the relevant check yourself before keeping the change.
Keep the evidence and the limits visible
The video’s benchmark figures come from published evaluations. Its setup walkthrough and first-request error are separate evidence from those scores. This guide preserves that distinction and does not claim that Luke completed a successful Mistral coding benchmark or a local server installation.
The full video and companion Short share this guide. Use EN, FR or ES in the language selector to change the written guide and watch the matching full video. Model availability, launcher behaviour and account terms can change; use the official links below for the current requirements.
The takeaway
Confirm cloud access with a small request, then verify one concrete coding change. Open weights, a working connection and a trustworthy result are three different checks.
About this article and its sources
Prepared 1 November 2026 from the exact published Mistral video descriptions and chapters, Ollama’s model/cloud/Claude Code documentation, the model card and vLLM recipe. Published benchmarks are attributed, not independently reproduced. The first cloud request in the video returned Payment Required; no successful local deployment or comparative coding test is claimed.
