What the router changes

FreeLLMAPI combines access to several AI providers behind a single router key. The interface you use and the model answering a request are separate choices: connecting it to Claude Code does not make Anthropic’s paid Claude models free.

The walkthrough uses a small video-brief checklist as its task. The important checks are which model answers, whether it can make the requested change, and whether the page retains its state after a refresh. Provider offers and account quotas remain separate from the router.

Follow the setup in the video

Start with the project repository linked below. The Claude Code launcher is described as experimental, so follow the version shown in the video and check the current project instructions before relying on it.

  1. Set up the router and open its desktop interface.
  2. Add the Google or Groq provider keys for the accounts you intend to use.
  3. Choose the available models and their fallback order.
  4. Connect Claude Code through the experimental launcher.
  5. Send a small request and inspect which model actually answered.

Check the result and its limits

For the checklist example, ask for browser persistence, make a change, then refresh the page and inspect the saved state. A successful response in the chat is different from a feature that still works after reload.

Fallback helps route around a provider limit only when another configured provider can serve the request. It does not remove account limits, guarantee model availability or establish that one model is a drop-in replacement for another.

The takeaway

Check both the responding model and the resulting application behaviour; the router is a connection layer, not unlimited free access.
