Hacktron: connect code review and inspect a security-test report
Use an authorised scope, review reproducible findings and verify fixes against the affected behaviour.
Watch the original video ↗Define the repository and testing scope
Thanks to Hacktron for sponsoring this video.
The recorded example connects GitHub for PR reviews and runs a white-box test on Luke’s own app. It reports 13 vulnerabilities, including eight high-severity findings. Those are results reported by this video, not a claim about another app.
- Choose only a repository and environment you own or are authorised to test.
- Inspect the GitHub connection and intended PR-review scope.
- Define the approved target and data for a deeper test.
- Keep synthetic accounts and a recoverable test environment where possible.
Inspect the finding, not just the count
The source also links a Rocket.Chat case study. A separate case study provides context; it does not establish the severity of a finding in your repository.
- Read the affected route, preconditions and evidence for each finding.
- Reproduce the behaviour within the authorised scope.
- Compare the reported result with the access or validation rule the app should enforce.
- Prioritise verified problems without treating a severity label as the complete analysis.
Retest repairs and keep remaining limits visible
An automated review can help surface problems, but a successful scan is not a certification of the whole application.
- Review the proposed code change and its effect on the affected behaviour.
- Repeat the original reproduction after the fix.
- Check adjacent permitted and denied cases.
- Record unresolved findings, untested areas and the relevant report date.
The takeaway
Treat the output as evidence for review and repair. The guide does not perform a penetration test or guarantee that the application is secure.
