## Choose the product feature you want to build

Luke’s August 2025 roadmap describes applied AI engineering as adding useful AI capabilities to products, rather than following unrelated tutorials or stopping at a thin API wrapper. The featured DataCamp Associate AI Engineer for Developers track is described as 26 hours across nine chapters, with projects, browser-based practice and sandbox credits. Those details belong to the recorded overview.

1. Open the exact featured resource, https://datacamp.pxf.io/550zYD, and compare its current content with your starting knowledge. Define one useful product feature and the evidence that would show it works.
2. Write the input, expected output and constraints before choosing libraries. Keep a simple baseline so you can tell whether adding AI improves the actual task rather than only making the implementation more complicated.

## Practise the concepts in a connected sequence

The description covers AI APIs and prompts, Hugging Face models, LLM operations, embeddings, vector databases and LangChain applications. Each addresses a different part of the product. A sensible practice project connects them only where the feature needs that capability, rather than requiring every named tool at once.

1. Start with a small API-based task and compare its output with known examples. Record prompt changes, errors and usage before adding another component.
2. Where the feature needs source retrieval, prepare a small permitted document set and test whether the relevant material is found. Keep retrieval quality separate from the language model’s final explanation so failures can be diagnosed.

## Make the result explainable and affordable

The roadmap section starts at 5:40 and course tips at 8:04. The description emphasises cost controls, certification and translating jargon for stakeholders. A working exercise should therefore demonstrate both the behaviour and the practical limits of the feature, not simply that a library imported successfully.

1. Add an evaluation case with missing or ambiguous information and inspect the response. Track usage and the work needed to correct failures before extending the project to more inputs.
2. Explain the feature in ordinary language: what it does, which sources or services it depends on and how you checked it. Review current course and credit terms separately from any employment or salary expectation.

## The takeaway

Use a coherent project to connect the learning stages. A demonstrable feature, clear checks and understandable costs are stronger evidence of progress than a collection of tool names.
