## 1. Make the fundamentals visible

Luke’s 19 June 2026 roadmap separates making a prototype from operating something reliable and worth paying for. Level 1 covers APIs, JSON, authentication, environment variables, databases, Git and deployment. Use one small application throughout the levels so each new concept has a concrete job.

1. Trace one request from its input to a saved record and deployed response; identify where authentication and private configuration belong.
2. For Python foundations, inspect https://datacamp.pxf.io/DWO9Do; for APIs in Python, use https://datacamp.pxf.io/OYOV6z. Compare the curriculum with the gaps you identified.

## 2. Treat a model call as a contract

Level 2 moves from chatting with a model to specifying a reliable contract. Prompting, tokens and cost matter because the application needs predictable inputs and usable outputs, not just persuasive prose. The retained OpenAI API course is https://datacamp.pxf.io/MK2G03.

1. Write the expected input, output and failure response for one model-backed task; record token use and cost during a small check.

## 3. Decide what context is actually needed

Level 3 covers RAG, embeddings and vector databases, including when not to use RAG. Start with the information the task needs and a known answer. Adding retrieval is a design choice to justify, not an automatic upgrade.

1. Compare a small task with directly supplied context against a retrieval approach, checking the source material behind each answer.

## 4. Give agents only the autonomy required

The fourth level distinguishes workflows from agents and introduces least privilege. Decide which actions should follow a fixed sequence and which genuinely require model judgement before choosing tools or permissions.

1. List the allowed actions and review points for one task, then check that the agent cannot exceed that scope.

## 5. Make reliability inspectable

The production level names Docker, CI/CD and observability. Use them to make deployment and failures understandable, rather than treating a successful local run as completion. The recommended Associate AI Engineer for Developers track is https://datacamp.pxf.io/PzRJ3R; the published description mentions subscription access and a certification. Check current curriculum and terms before enrolling.

1. Document the deployment, an observable failure and the recovery path for the same small application.

## The takeaway

Progress is demonstrated by a working, inspectable application at each level. A certificate or completed checklist alone does not establish production readiness or paid work.
