# n8n MCP: inspect the trigger, client configuration and tool response

Follow the direction of the connection rather than treating every MCP mention as the same workflow.

## Keep community nodes and the newer route distinct

The April 2025 source says to keep using community nodes and links the earlier lesson: https://youtu.be/dF9LdFEzQB0. The chapters compare community nodes with the n8n release at 1:03 and examine the MCP trigger at 2:24. Understand which side invokes the tool before changing an existing agent.

A node used inside an agent and a workflow exposed to a client are different roles to inspect. Keep the task, selected tool and expected result visible so a connection example is not mistaken for a complete automation.

1. Follow the community-node comparison and trigger example.
2. Identify the workflow or tool the client should call.
3. Choose a small input with a checkable result.

## Use the source configuration without changing its keys

Technical setup begins at 7:19 and Claude Desktop at 11:42. The source supplies this server configuration. Preserve its command and argument keys; YOUR_URL is the placeholder for the intended endpoint, not a working address supplied here. The configuration uses npx and supergateway with --sse. That identifies the transport in this example; the URL must belong to the workflow you intend to expose.

```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
      "n8n": {
        "command": "npx",
        "args": [
          "-y",
          "supergateway",
          "--sse",
          "YOUR_URL"
        ]
      }
   }
}
```

1. Replace YOUR_URL with the endpoint for the intended workflow.
2. Inspect which server and tools the client exposes.

## Trace the request back to the workflow

Inspect the n8n execution produced by a small client request. A server appearing in a list does not establish that calls reach the correct workflow or return the intended fields. Compare request, workflow input and response before adding more actions.

The final chapter at 15:26 considers advanced potential. The description does not provide a complete production workflow or measured reliability. This April 2025 configuration is historical: use the recording and retained community-node lesson when checking compatibility with your client and n8n version. Keep any failed connection or incomplete response visible rather than treating setup as proof that the intended job has finished.

## The takeaway

Keep the connection direction clear and verify the actual response; server configuration is only one part of the workflow.
