## Start with a question you can verify

Luke’s May 2025 walkthrough presents AskYourDatabase for natural-language SQL analysis, dashboards, application chat and a desktop version. The practical starting point is a question whose meaning is clear in the underlying data. A conversational answer can be well written while using the wrong time window, join or definition of a customer.

1. Open https://lukejb.short.gy/AskYourDatabase and follow the connection shown in the video for a database you may analyse. Begin with test or non-sensitive records and a limited scope.
2. Write one question with its date range, grouping and business definition explicit. Keep an expected result from a small known sample or existing report for comparison.

## Inspect the query result before building the dashboard

The natural-language example begins at 0:18, chatbot creation at 2:14 and dashboards at 4:30. Generated SQL or charts do not remove the need to check what was counted. Use the same definition when moving from a single answer to a visual report.

1. Compare the answer with the known sample, inspecting the generated query where it is exposed. Check totals, missing values and duplicated records before accepting the business interpretation.
2. Create a dashboard around the checked metric and inspect labels, filters and the underlying values. Change one date range or grouping and compare the result with the corresponding data rather than judging only the chart’s appearance.

## Evaluate the application and desktop routes separately

The description discusses integrating chat into an app, while the desktop example starts at 7:21. An internal analyst and an application user can need different data access. The existence of a desktop interface does not by itself establish where all model processing happens or what permissions an embedded chatbot enforces.

1. For an application chat, define which records and questions each intended user may access. Test an allowed question and an out-of-scope request using the relevant account context.
2. For the desktop route, repeat the original checked analysis and compare the result. Keep the connection, metric definition and remaining limitations with the report so another person can interpret it correctly.

## The takeaway

Treat natural language as a more convenient query interface, not a replacement for metric definitions and data checks. The useful dashboard or chatbot preserves the meaning and access boundaries of the underlying database.
