## Choose the installation route deliberately

The 17 February 2025 tutorial self-hosts n8n using npm and explains Node.js, npm and Homebrew while comparing local operation with containers and virtual machines. It is a dated setup walkthrough, not confirmation that every command or supported version remains unchanged. Begin with the machine and installation route shown rather than mixing instructions from different approaches.

1. Use the retained guide: https://www.lukejbyrne.com/c/get-n8n-free.
2. Follow the npm-versus-Docker discussion at 02:03 and identify the route you intend to reproduce.
3. At 06:00, use the demonstrated Node.js/npm setup and record the installed versions; the published description itself does not supply copyable installation commands.

## Start n8n and inspect the browser session

Local execution begins at 08:03 and browser setup at 11:40. A terminal process and an accessible editor are separate checks. Local software also depends on the computer and process that run it; a workflow saved in the editor does not establish that a later scheduled execution occurred while the machine was unavailable.

1. Follow the recorded start sequence and inspect any terminal error before proceeding to browser setup.
2. Open the local interface through the demonstrated route and confirm that it belongs to the instance you started.
3. Create a small workflow with an identifiable input and inspect its actual output before connecting private accounts or a larger agent.
4. Keep the local data and configuration recoverable before changing the installation or switching execution routes.

## Connect the model as a separate dependency

AI-agent integration appears at 13:45 and local LLMs with Ollama at 15:20. Running n8n locally and running a model locally are different decisions. The source names DeepSeek among local-agent examples, but does not establish that every workflow avoids external API usage or that all models fit any computer.

1. Identify whether the chosen workflow calls a remote provider or a local model and inspect the actual connection response.
2. Test one known request and record failures or missing resources rather than assuming the agent works because the editor opened.
3. Check current licensing, provider costs and hardware needs separately from the historical “free” headline and cloud-trial promotion.

## The takeaway

A useful local installation has an inspectable runtime, browser connection and model route, with costs and uptime assumptions kept explicit.
